It is the mission of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University to achieve academic excellence in a professional context. One of the ways is through dedicated partnerships with business, industry, the professions and the community. PolyU is working towards its strategic goal - to be the most enterprising university reputed for enterprise-university partnership and collaboration as well as scholarship in application and integration in the coming few years.
The University looks beyond the territory in steering its future development. In the Region, it will position itself growing as the leader and preferred partner in education and research in the areas where its strength lies. Such areas cover health enhancement; product design, development and marketing; professional and executive development on the mainland; and urban sustainable development.
The following sections highlight the collaboration between the University and various sectors of the community.
Serving Industry and Business
The turn of the century has witnessed rapid changes in many aspects, notably greater global competition, rise of the internet and increasing sophistication of customer demands. To cope with new trends and future challenges, the University has devised a two-pronged strategy. This encompasses a streamlined structure to provide self-financed education and training support for the community on the one hand, and on the other hand professional services for business and industry in the areas of technology and product development as well as management and executive development.
The mammoth set-up, comprising School of Professional Education and Executive Development (SPEED) and Institute for Enterprise (IfE), serves as a one-stop shop which caters for the needs of the future knowledge-based economy of Hong Kong.

'Preferred Graduate' Development Programme
PolyU has built up a strong network with the private and public sectors to help provide students with all-round education.
Launched in 1997, the 'Preferred Graduate' Development Programme is an effective initiative to provide students with practical work experience during summer placements with companies at home and abroad. Many students have been arranged to work for multinational firms on the mainland and in Europe, the United States and Australia and acquired useful hands-on in-service training.
Several hundreds of companies have participated in the Programme. These partner companies not only benefit from the students' services, but also contribute to PolyU's efforts to produce "ready-to-work" graduates for the community.
As for the students, the on-the-job training gives them an invaluable opportunity to be exposed to the workplace and apply what they have learned in the classroom. There is also a possibility of a permanent position after graduation.

Collaborating with Academic and Professional Organisations
As a well-established university, PolyU embraces the importance of developing close links with both local and overseas academic and professional institutions.
PolyU's first official contact with higher education institutions on the mainland was established in 1978, which resulted in a stupendous growth in academic and professional exchanges between the University and its counterparts in various Chinese cities. The mutually beneficial co-operations include staff attachment, development of distance-learning packages, joint research projects, commercialisation of research results and study tours.

The University forges close links with the public through various liaison channels, including corporate communications, marketing, public relations and alumni liaison.
Publications which are produced on a regular basis include the annual report, corporate magazine and newsletters. All of these serve to enhance the understanding of different target audiences about the University's activities and development.

Over the years PolyU has groomed a large number of graduates, who are part and parcel of the local workforce. The University has bonded strongly with its alumni. The Federation of the PolyU Alumni Associations in Hong Kong, together with two overseas associations in Western and Eastern Canada, play a key role in bridging the communication between the Institution and its graduates.
